Pre-assessment
Before students start the unit I suggest doing a quick assessment on students basic knowledge of fractions from what is expected at the grade 3 level and what they need to know by the end of the grade 4 fractions unit. That way you can meet students where they are at and if doing any work with small groups you can group based on students level of understanding. Pre-assessing will also allow you to compare students level of understanding at the beginning of the unit and at the end of the unit.
Suggestions
There are many ways you could pre-assess students. Here are a few suggestions:
- Saskatchewan Common Math Assessments - these are pre and post assessments you can use and are available through many Saskatchewan school division teacher resources websites.
- Knowledgehook - a free/paid math assessment online program
- School division resources - check with your school division to see what resources they have for pre-assessing math concepts/outcomes. Regina Catholic School division has created EMCA (Elementary Math Concepts Assessments) that gives teachers a snapshot of students' level of understanding at each grade level with just 2 pages of math questions per grade level. At the grade 3 level there are four questions specifically about fractions and at grade 4 level there are five questions.
